Even before starting undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering, I had a deep interest in computers and the computer aided design. During my undergraduate education at Middle East Technical University, the courses related to design and drawing inspired me more than the others. One of those courses was engineering drawing, later I learned a computer aided drawing program Autocad and enjoyed it very much. I mean drawing something and visualize it before manufacturing exited me very much. Especially the course ME 407 'Mechanical Engineering Design': the course subject of which is to make the design and construction of a machine where students form a group of 3 students and choose a project among 3 project topics, was the best course for me. The course, not only enjoyed I but also gave a strong feeling to me that these related courses and areas are the most suitable ones for me. Another important thing I learned during taking that ME 407 course was that I enjoyed group study very much, sharing responsibilities and creating and manufacturing a new machine.

 

          Therefore, on a graduate study, I want to specialize on computer aided design (CAD) and may be manufacturing (CAM) because I think I can work best on those  subjects. In my opinion, both design and manufacturing are the subjects that combine and strengthen the theoretical knowledge that is given in courses. Being more specific, design is the most suitable subject for me. So on a graduate study I want to gain more knowledge and experience on design subject because during undergraduate study there are not many courses about CAD and related subject. The graduate study, I think, the best way to gain the experience  of this subject: CAD.

 

          In the near future, I want to work in a company at R&D department of it, being a part of a team that make new designs. For the time being, I want to come back to my country and carry my professional goals at here in a conglomerate after finishing my graduate study. In the long term, the real motivation for me is to establish an independent design and consultancy firm that creates and sells designs for industry and help organizations about problems they face while production and managing the organization. Shortly, I want to specialize on mechanical engineering for earning my life. 

          I believe Mechanical Engineering today is undergoing major changes in its fundamental description like many other subjects with the developments in electronics and computer sciences. Mechanical Engineering has already become an inter-diciplinary field. It is impossible to bring further developments in this field without extensive training in these said subjects. I intend to pursue an academic career ; which will give me the means of doing research and development in a simulated environment in my field of interest. I believe the industry fails to extend the multi-disiplinary environment that is necessary for R&D work in the subject I intend to study.

 

          Even before starting my undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering, I had a deep interest in computer technology. Not only the hardware but I have been involved in the development of various professional software of commercial and scientific values on PC's, mainly database, educational and Windows based programs. I therefore got familiar with computer technology and the use of computers in mechanical engineering area as well as other areas.

 

          Having intensified my experiences, knowledge and efforts I found out the most attractive sub field in the Mechanical Engineering Area for me is Artificial Intelligence and Dynamics ( mainly the Biomechanics and Robotics). I further concentrated my efforts to make further progress on these very important and promising fields.

 

          I might try on the possibilities of combining AI with Dynamics branch of Mechanical Engineering. As far as I am concerned there will be a great deal of need for applications as well as scientific studies in this area. Taking all these into consideration if I am accepted fot the Fullbright Study Scholarship and have completed MS degree in USA, I would like to go further on to Ph.D. level and then continue on the academic career in Turkey.
